Late Hume Equaliser Confirms The Poshs S

In what appears to be Jim Gannons last game in charge at Posh, a makeshift team put in a battling performance to earn a draw at Oakwell. Jim Gannon surprised many by giving a first championship starts to Danny Mills who played as a lone striker in a 5-4-1 formation. Joe Lewis did not appear for the pre-match warm up with the rest of the squad due to an injury he picked up in training meaning James McKeown was handed his first Peterborough United start taking his place between the sticks.Ryan BENNETT made his first start since sustaining an injury back in February and the 289 travelling posh fans, who had made the journey to the Kyle Fuller Jersey former mining town, were soon on their feet to applaud a shock opener after 5 minutes from the former Grimsby man as he controlled a downwards header well from Exodus Geohaghon, turned the Barnsley centre back, and placed the ball into the bottom corner past the despairing dive of ex-posh keeper Luke Steele. It was only the second time Posh had led at any point on their travels since mid-September and Bennetts first goal in a Posh shirt since joining from Grimsby Town ealier in the season. However, the joy was short lived as Posh gave a demonstration of their defensive frailties which have been a major contributor in what has been a shocking season. Bennett turned Tarik Cohen Jersey from hero to villain as he failed to control a clearance from James McKeown and with Griffiths beaten to the ball, Adam Hammill was behind the posh back line and despite the efforts of Zakuani to put off veteran striker Jon Macken, the ball rolled through to Iain HUME who fired in off the post.It was a kick in the teeth for the travelling posh fans that sensed that relegation may have been put on hold for another week. Gilbert limped off to add to The Poshs injury worries, that already meant the squad was down to its bare-bones and was replaced by Rueben Reid; a player who excelled at Rotherham under the management of current Barnsley bo s Mark Robins.Neither side seemed to have the cutting edge to increase their goal tally until the last few minutes of the first half as the home side began to get on top. McKeown was called into action to deny Martin Devaney and watchedLuke Potters header drift wide of the mark before showing a sign of the quality that many observers have seen in him with the keeper often being referred to as one for the future; the Posh back line went to sleep as Hammill got to the by line unchallenged and with two red shirts free in the box, he picked out Macken and, just as posh looked to have thrown away the lead, Mckeown reacted quickly to block the strikers header. Whilst Macken failed to get any angle on the header, McKeown did well to parry it away.At half time Jim Gannon made a substitution which bemused most of the travelling posh faithful. Youngster Romone McCrae was given his first taste of competitive football in a Posh shirt with Ryan Bennett was withdrawn. Gabriel Zakuani remained on the pitch despite visibly struggling with an injury. McCrae nearly had an awful first touch though as a ball into the box deflected off the former Grays man into the grateful arms of McKeown which did nothing to ease the debutants nerves.McKeown was again called into action as Barnsley won their first corner of the second half. Defender Stephen Foster jumped highest and directed his header towards the target but, with most of the fans behind the goal already on their feet, Mckeown got a touch to push the shot over the bar. The home supporters were becoming increasingly frustrated as their side mi sed two great opportunities within seconds; Hume fired his shot against the inside of the post and, with Mckeown struggling to Charles Leno Jersey get into position, Hammill fired the ball wide. A goal looked to be coming for the home side as Posh struggled to keep Barnsley out. The limping Zakuani had to produce a superb block to deny Hammill moments later as the home side continued the onslaught on McKeowns goal.Having lost Mills to injury, Posh created their first real chance of the half soon after as Reuben Reid fired wide after failing to make a clean contact with the ball. Reid again was in the thick of the action as he forced former Posh goalkeeper Luke Steele into a decent save after bursting into the box. The visitors were beginning to put up a fight and Mills replacement Craig Mackail-Smith mi sed a golden chance to give Posh the lead after Tommy Rowe put him through inside the area but he got his shot away too late and the outstretched hand of Steele diverted the ball to safety. However, the Barnsley keeper could do nothing about a rasping effort from ROWE which found its way into the bottom corner from 25 yards out.Barnsley Prince Amukamara Jersey tried to launch an offensive to get back into the game with The Posh finding some space as they threw men forward. Sergio Torres and Craig Mackail-Smith both tested Steele but after Mark Robins took drastic action making a triple substitution, the hosts hit back and Poshs attempts to delay their relegation date looked all but over. It was the second of the game for HUME as the Canadian striker latched onto a ball into the box, rounded McKeown and placed it into the empty net, from close range Danny Trevathan Jersey , before Exodus Geoghagon could make an attempt to clear it off the line. The Barnsley fans were up on their feet again as Anderson Da Silva appeared to have given them all 3 points in injury time but the linesmans flag cut short the celebrations. The home support nearly had to endure a very late twist but once again Steele put his body on the line to deny Mackail-Smith from scoring a last gasp winner as the striker charged forward at goal. The final whistle blew and Posh were thus relegated to League 1 after a season which their support has found hard to bear. However, a lot of positives can be taken from this performance by a makeshift posh side against a team that have performed better than many and po sibly most expected them to this season. With rumours of Jim Gannons departure and Gary Johnson being set to take being all but confirmed, it could well be the dawn of a new era for Peterborough United.Neither George nor I were at the match today so this report has been written by guest writter Chris Foster. We would like to thank him for his efforts.
